Jennifer N. Carman, ASA has a wide-ranging background in the art world, having worked with leading auction houses, commercial galleries, museums, and private collectors in the United States as well as the United Kingdom. She began her career with a three year period abroad where she was immersed in London’s auction and retail gallery sector.
Ms. Carman pursued studies in the fine and decorative arts at Christie’s while gaining experience at the famed Andipa Gallery in Knightsbridge, a commercial gallery with an emphasis on Modern and Contemporary artists including Picasso, Matisse, Miró, Warhol, Wesselmann, Hockney, Hirst, and Banksy.
Upon her return to the United States, Ms. Carman continued her studies with a focus on appraisal theory and methodology, and in 2003 she founded J. CARMAN, Inc., Fine & Decorative Art, a Little Rock based firm specializing in art advisory and appraisal services for clients on both sides of the pond.
Jennifer Carman, a graduate of Hendrix College, holds a Master’s degree in Art History from the University of Glasgow with an emphasis on fine and decorative American and European arts of the Renaissance through the present day. She is a Graduate Connoisseur of Christie’s Education in London, where she studied paintings, works on paper, sculpture, furniture, ceramics, textiles, silver and glass. She has successfully completed coursework in appraisal theory and methodology, and holds a Certificate in Appraisal Studies from the State University of New York at Purchase College. Ms. Carman stays up-to-date with the current USPAP (Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice) regulations and guidelines, and is tested on these standards every two years by the American Society of Appraisers (ASA). The USPAP are promulgated by the Appraisal Standards Board of the Appraisal Foundation in Washington, DC. Jennifer Carman is an Accredited Senior Appraiser with the American Society of Appraisers and is an Accredited Member of the International Society of Appraisers and the Appraisers Association of America. Her specialities include Fine Art (Paintings, Works on Paper, and Sculpture) and Antiques and Decorative Arts.
In addition to the aforementioned general specialties, Jennifer Carman, ASA also has documented and extensive experience appraising extraordinarily unique “difficult-to-value” items such as historic memorabilia relating to civil liberties, civil rights, and social justice. Ms. Carman has appraised thousands of individual arts, crafts and documents relating to the the World War II era Japanese American internment camp experience, as well as objects associated with the popular culture surrounding the civil rights struggles of African Americans. Other special interests include the Arts and Crafts Movement in Britain and America, and the regional fine and decorative arts of Arkansas, particularly works by Louis and Elsie Freund and Mike Disfarmer. In 2005 Ms. Carman cataloged and appraised the contents of the Drennen-Scott House (now a public museum) in Van Buren, Arkansas, and in 2009, she cataloged and authored narrative for the entire holding of quilts at the Historic Arkansas Museum, a museum of the Department of Arkansas Heritage. She has appraised the contents of multiple estates relating to famous American literary figures. Ms. Carman has served on the Art Advisory Panel of the Little Rock Convention Center and Visitor’s Bureau, and has served on the American Society of Appraisers' Personal Property Committee as an At-Large Member, Secretary, Government Liaison Representative, and Chair of PR/Marketing. One of her recent projects was serving as a consultant and author for the expanded and revised edition of Historic Arkansas Museum's "Arkansas Made" book series, a multi-volume publication that will explore the fine and decorative arts made by Arkansas artisans through 1950.
